Professor Philippe Goujoun


Area of Expertise

His research fields and expertise include the history and philosophy of science (biotechnology and technologies of information and communication) - the epistemology of complexity sciences - the epistemology and ethics of computing technologies, governance theories (relation between rationality, reflexivity, ethics and governance) – participative theory – ethical assessment of new technologies - internet governance issues - governance theories - ambient intelligence systems (epistemology and history and ethics) - the conditions and impact of ethical reflexivity in technology development projects - assessment of ethical issues related to emerging technologies.

Prof.em. Dr. Rafael Capurro


Area of Expertise

Professor Capurro's field of expertise is practical philosophy or ethics in conjuction with new technologies. His philosophical roots go back to phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger) and hermeneutics (Gadamer) as well as to philosophy of technology, particularly ICT. He worked for many years in the field of information managament at Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe and taught information science and information ethics for more than twenty years at university level (Stuttgart Media University and University of Stuttgart). He has done ethical counseling for ten years (2000-2010) at the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) to the European Commission as well as in several European and international projects such as ETHICBOTS and ETICA. In 1999 he created the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) with the support of the Center for Art and Media (Karlsruhe), probably the first online communities in the field of information ethics at a time where social software was not available and online communities were not popular as they became some years later. He promoted the intercultural dialogue in information ethics particularly in Africa, the Far East and Latin America, creating research networks and regular conferences. In 2004 he created with the support of Dr. Felix Weil (Stuttgart) the International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE), a free peer-review journal. He co-edits two book series on information ethics, one at Fink Verlag Munich and the other one at Franz Steiner Verlag Stuttgart. He and his wife have created the Capurro Fiek Foundation dealing with ethical challenges of new technologies particularly in developing countries.

Dr. Stephen Rainey

Area of Expertise

Dr. Stephen Rainey has a First Class honours degree and a Master's degree with distinction in philosophy. He obtained his PhD entitled A Pragmatic Conception of Rationality in 2008 from Queen's University, Belfast. He has published articles on topics related to the philosophy of language, group identity, understanding and rationality and edited volumes of philosophical papers. He has taught on the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind, ethics and jurisprudence. Dr. Rainey is currently based in FUNDP, Namur. He is a consortium member of and research contributor to both the FP7-funded research projects ETICA and EGAIS which each seek to clarify the nature and role of ethics in technology development and European policy-making.

Job Timmermans

Area of Expertise

Job Timmermans has a background in engineering and philosophy. In the past five years he has worked as an entrepreneur/ co-founder of Internet-startup PEERS. He also lectures at the TU Delft on engineering ethics and information ethics.

Currently Job is organizing the 2011 NWO Conference on responsible innovation.
