Tourist information

Mantova is the capital of the province of the same name and has about 47,000 inhabitants.
The town of Mantua was founded around 2000 BC on the banks of the river Mincio that flows from the lake of Garda to the Po river.
During the 12th century, three artificial lakes (called "Superior", "Middle" and "Inferior" lakes) surrounding the town on three sides were created to defend it.
Its fame is principally linked to the Gonzaga family, who ruled the city from 1328 to 1708 and created a rich duchy appealing some of the most famous Italian artists of the period, such as Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti, Giulio Romano and many others.
